This collection consists of Civil War correspondence and portraits. Letters of interest include a letter from Braxton Bragg, a letter from Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler to [Henry] Wilson, complaining of General [Quincy Adams] Gilmore and suggesting he ought to be removed from his command and a letter from Jefferson Davis to the [Confederate] Senate and House of Representatives. Portraits consists of drawings of members of the United States and Confederate military.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler. His father served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later became a privateer, dying of yellow fever in the West Indies not long after Benjamin was born.
